Boiler Insurance
Sometimes the potential costs of boiler repairs can be a bit daunting - especially if the repair bill is unexpected and isn't in your household budget. One way round this is to buy boiler insurance cover.
In return for a fixed monthly premium (generally of around £7-£15) you get cover for many of the most common boiler problems.
But boiler insurance has its drawbacks too.
Firstly, boiler insurance policies generally don't include boiler servicing - so you'll have to stump up for that too.
Secondly, like all insurance policies, there is usually an excess payable if you make a claim. This means that for minor boiler repairs, the amount of cover you get might be very small indeed.
Thirdly, certain types of boiler repairs are usually excluded by the terms of the boiler insurance policy.
For example, the British Gas boiler insurance policy excludes work like removing scale and sludge from the boiler, or repairing extended flues (because they can be hard to access).
The good news is that some boiler insurance policies will provide you with a new boiler if your old boiler is so badly damaged that the insurer's engineers cannot fix it. All in all, if you are worried about whether you could afford several hundred pounds for a new boiler or major boiler maintenance work, boiler insurance cover could be one way to give you peace of mind about keeping your central heating working through thick and thin.
