20 per cent of rogue gas maintenance is "dangerous"

16 October 2010

The Gas Safe Register have announced that they believe that one in five jobs done by unauthorised gas fitters is dangerous.

Over a quarter of a million illegal gas maintenance jobs are carried out each year they reckon.

And based on a sample of the work that they inspected, 20 per cent of the work left faulty gas equipment, some of which could be dangerous - or even lethal.

The bottom line is that gas fitters who are not on the Gas Safe Register are working illegally.

While they might offer the promise of cheap boiler servicing to cash strapped families, their work is illegal and often dangerous.

How can you protect youself against rogue gas boiler engineers?

Paul Johnstone, chief executive of the Gas Safe Register, says "What we want people to do is take a little bit of care and check they are using a registered person".

You can do this by making sure that your gas engineer has an up to date Gas Register card before you let him or her near your central heating system or other gas appliances.
